Wanderers

A poem that I absolutely love with some of my thoughts. Woohoo!

The railroad track is miles away,

And the day is loud with speaking,

Yet, there isn’t a train goes by all day

But I hear its shrieking

All night there isn’t a train that goes by,

Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming

But I see its cinders red on the sky,

And I hear its engine screaming.

My heart is warm with the friends I make,

And better friends I’ll not be knowing.

Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,

No matter where it’s going.

-Edna St. Vincent Millay

Millay could simply be describing the desire to explore the world and see new things, but I think she is trying to connecting readers to the restlessness that lies within some. She relates to those who constantly think about what they could or should be doing. Initially, there’s a mystique to her words. There’s always a bit of glamour associated with fanciful individuals who can drop their lives on a whim to fulfill some dream. However, Millay also draws on the selfishness of these actions. Every dreamer leaves someone behind as they charge forward.

    1. I am glad you enjoyed the post. To some point, I think leaving people is almost unavoidable unless you plan to stay in one place forever. You do a good job keeping in touch. Look out for my next analysis because I plan to add some of my thoughts to the Robert Frost poem. You might like it.
